The Maranacook Community School boys Alpine team has competed in six meets this season, and has won each one. Friday’s win at Titcomb Mountain in Farmington may have been the most impressive showing yet for the Black Bears.
Maranacook skiers finished one, two and three in the slalom race, as well as sixth to win with 12 points.
“That’s the lowest my team has ever scored,” Maranacook coach Ronn Gifford, now in his 10th season with the Black Bears, said.
Alec Daigle, Matt Delmar and Kelby Mace have been a consistent top three for the Black Bears. Gifford called Toby Smith the unsung hero of the team.
“He’s been super solid. Toby’s finished in the top 10 in all but one race,” Gifford said.
Others skiing well for Maranacook include Kai Pakulski and Nathan Delmar.
“The first half of the season went well,” Gifford said. “As well as they’ve been skiing, we definitely have some things to work on.”
Maranacook should be one of the favorites at the Class B state championship next month, but Gifford noted that some of the top competition, like Yarmouth and Freeport, are unknowns, as the Black Bears will not see them in any regular-season races.
“The big question is the WMC (Western Maine Conference) and SMAA (Southern Maine Activities Association) schools. What do they have?” Gifford said.

Some of the best Nordic racers in the state competed in the Sassi Memorial Classic on Saturday at Black Mountain in Rumford.
Kaelyn Woods of Gray-New Gloucester was the girls winner, followed by Hadley Moreau and Sarah Wade of Mt. Blue. Braden Becker of Yarmouth won the boys race, with Ben Allen of Portland second and Gould Academy’s Marcello Deluca third.
Yarmouth was the team winner on the girls side, followed by Mt. Blue and Falmouth. Gould Academy was the top boys team, with Yarmouth second and Maranacook third.

The dates for the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference/Mountain Valley Conference meets are set.
The Nordic freestyle championship will be on Wednesday, Feb. 5, at Black Mountain in Rumford. The Nordic classical championship will be on Saturday, Feb. 8, at Titcomb Mountain in Farmington.
The Alpine racing will begin with the giant slalom on Wednesday, Feb. 12, at Black Mountain. The slalom championship will be on Saturday, Feb. 15, at Titcomb Mountain.
