Augusta car crash causes power outage

AUGUSTA — A car crash about 6:30 a.m. Monday sent at least one person to the hospital by ambulance and cut off power to customers an area off Leighton Road.

Augusta police investigated the accident in which a vehicle struck a telephone pole and split it in half near the intersection with Old Winthrop Road.

The creash caused a power outage of less than an hour, and the pole had to be replaced, according to Central Maine Power Co.

Contractors help slow Jefferson fire

JEFFERSON — Fire officials credited a trio of quick-thinking contractors for saving a Hallowell Road home from a Monday morning fire.

Fire Chief Walter Morris said nobody was hurt in the fire at 151 Hallowell Road, but that the two-story home sustained moderate damage. Morris said he believes the home, which was unoccupied and under renovations, can be repaired. Morris did not immediately know the name of the homeowners, who live in New York, or whether the home was insured.

The fire broke out a little before 9:30 a.m., in a first-floor closet that enclosed a chimney and plumbing. The fire spread to the second floor and into a small section of the attic. Firefighters doused the flames within minutes of arrival, but there was some damage as crews cut out sections of wall and beam to water down hot spots.

Morris said three workmen were in the house when the fire broke out. The men tried the extinguish the flames with snow, which Morris said helped slow the fire’s spread.

“They stayed until the smoke drove them out,” he said.

Most importantly, the men closed the door on their way out of the house, which limited the fire air supply and helped keep it in check.

Morris said the home was heated by a wood furnace in the basement that had duct work leading to the closet area. He believes furnace spared the fire.

Firefighters from Waldoboro, Washington, Whitefield and Windsor responded with Jefferson to the blaze. Pittston and Nobleboro firefighters were on their way but turned around when the fire was quickly extinguished.
