WEST BATH — A pickup truck and trailer attending car races on the New Meadows River in West Bath broke partially through the ice, but was pulled free about five hours later.
Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Deputy Steve Thibeault says officers responded to the river at about 1:25 p.m. Sunday.
He tells The Times Record that Glenwood Fotter of Oakland got out of his car after the race and was walking toward his pickup when people noticed water coming up over the ice. He tried to move the truck, but the rear wheels broke through the ice about 200 to 300 feet from shore.
Race organizers tested the ice before the race and determined it was 12 to 14 inches thick — enough to support vehicles.
No one was hurt and no charges were issued.
