CARRABASSETT VALLEY — Mt. Blue enjoyed a strong opening day of the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference skiing championships Friday at Sugarloaf.

Sarah Wade successfully defended her 5-kilometer freestyle championship by finishing in 18 minutes, 1.5 seconds.

Teammate Julia Ramsey was second in 19:33.5. Miriam Cohen was 10th (20:45.3) and Leah Hardy was 11th (21:10.0) for the Cougars as well.

On the boys side, Mt. Blue’s Ike Doiron finished third in 15:46.4. Sam Wood, of Mt. Ararat, won the KVAC freestyle championship in 14:23.0.

Ethan Harriman was second in 15:41.5.

Mt. Blue also received strong showings from Dan Lesko and Dustin Staples, who were sixth and eighth, respectivaly. Lesko finished in 16:07.5 while Staples checked in with a time of 16:11.1.

Sugarloaf also hosted the Mountain Valley Conference freestyle championships Friday.

Isabel Gerencer, of St. Dom’s, won the girls title in 19:08.8 while Monmouth’s Dylan Thombs took the boys title in 15:20.9.

Thombs edged out a host of Mt. Abram skiers, including runnerup Thomas Farraday (15:36.7), No. 3 Xavier Romanoski (17:16.1) and Courtland Talmage (18:02.9).

Boys basketball

VALLEY 75, GREENVILLE 54: Dylan Belanger turned in a strong performance with 16 points, eight assists, six steals and four rebounds as Valley ended the regular season with a key Western D victory. Collin Miller had 12 points and Luke Malloy finished with nine as the Cavaliers improved to 14-4.

Matt Diangelo scored 22 points to pace the Lakers (15-3).

College

Colby skiers Amy Bianco and Olivia Amber each posted top-15 finishes at the 5-kilometer skate at the Dartmouth Carnival.

Bianco was 13th in 15:50.7 while Amber was 14th in 15:52.1.

John Dixon led the Colby men with a 25th-place finish. He finished in 27:39.6.

The Colby women finished fifth and the men seventh at the event.
