Neither Messalonskee junior Kristy Prelgovisk nor Cony sophomore Noah Aube knew what to expect when they arrived at the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class A swim meet Saturday morning.

They left the Bath Family YMCA with some dominant performances.

Prelgovisk set meet records in the 200-yard individual medley (2 minutes, 10.01 seconds) and 100 breaststroke (1:05.36).

“I was sick and a little tired,” she said. “I didn’t expect this at all. Not with the way I was feeling. I was very surprised. I didn’t think I could do that but it was a very good day.”

Aube won the 500 free (5:13.45) and 200 (1:55.20).

“I was seeded first but I hadn’t seen a lot of the swimmers so I didn’t know what to expect,” he said. “It feels really, really good, though.”

Brunswick swept the meet in convincing fashion.

The Brunswick girls scored 367 points while Prelgovisk and Messalonskee finished second with 236. Cony (154 points), Mt. Ararat (142) and Lewiston (129) rounded out the top five.

The Brunswick boys, led by sophomore Nate Samson, finished with 344 points. Samson set meet records in the 200 individual medley (1:59.66) and 100 breaststroke (1:00.99).

“I just wanted to go out and swim well,” he said. “I wanted to go out and swim fast, and I did. It’s hard to process. I’m thrilled and am at a loss for words.”

Lewiston was second with 267 while Messalonskee checked in third with 164. Cony finished fourth with 142 points.

Prelgovisk earned girls swimmer of the meet honors after breaking two records.

She shaved about five seconds off her time in the 200 individual medley and edged Brunswick freshman Caitlin Tycz at the finish. Tycz finished in 2:10.94.

“We were with each other at the start,” Prelgovisk said. “She got a little ahead of me in the backstroke but in I pulled up to her in the breaststroke. In the freestyle, I just pushed it as hard as I could. I’ve worked really hard the past few weeks, just working on my strokes.

“It paid off really well.”

Prelgovisk won the 100 breaststroke by about three seconds over Edward Little junior Olivia Paione.

“I felt really good in the breaststroke,” said Prelgovisk, who eclipsed her own meet record in the event by a little more than a second. “It felt smooth.”

Aube won the 200 free by more than three seconds over Brunswick freshman Henry Raker.

He followed up that victory with a dominant showing in the 500. Aube won the event by more than 10 seconds over Lawrence sophomore Alex Bevier.

“I really tried to work on pacing today,” Aube said. “I usually start really fast and then go slow in the middle and lose ground. I wanted to be a little more consistent. The 500 was fun. In the first 100 of it I swam it easier than I usually do.

“I usually take it out hard in the first 100. The second 100 felt good and third 100 was slow, but I finished pretty fast. It felt good.”

Samson broke two records that have stood for several years.

Former Morse swimmer David Searles set the previous 200 individual medley mark of 2:00.00 in 1995.

Samson broke a KVAC A 100 breaststroke record that had stood for 25 years. Former Morse swimmer Ray Gaul set the previous record of 1:01.02 in 1989.

“It feels unbelievable,” said Samson, who also swam on two winning relay teams, the 400 free and 200 medley.

Also at the KVAC A meet, the Messalonskee girls won the 200 medley relay. Amber Sutherland, Prelgovisk, Ally Fischang and Kenya Whitehead finished in 2:00.01.

Whitehead also was second in the 50 free with a time of 27.99.

Cony freshman Anna Guadalupi finished second in the 200 free (2:02.46) and 500 free (5:29.11). Cony junior Kayley McNeff was also second in the 100 free (58.37).
