BANGOR — The University of Maine at Presque Isle is ready to provide details of its move to proficiency-based education.
Public high schools are required to incorporate proficiency-based standards by 2018, and UMaine-Presque Isle aims to become the first university in Maine and the first in the country to do the same.
UMPI President Linda Schott will announce a grant aimed at assisting the transition during a news conference on Thursday.
The system requires students to show mastery or proficiency in specific subject areas to advance and to get degrees. The announcement was being made at the University of Maine System headquarters.
