EMBDEN — A 22-year-old woman was killed in a head-on collision late Thursday afternoon on Route 16, according to police.

Jennifer Nile, of Embden, was a passenger in a 2012 Chevy Malibu that struck another car head-on on Route 16 in Embden at around 4:30 p.m. Thursday, said Chief Deputy Dale Lancaster of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department.

The driver, Mark R. Schobel, 24, of North Anson, was driving east and had just passed another vehicle, not involved in the accident, when he struck a 2012 Subaru Outback driven by Leon Souweine, 67, of Bangor.

Nile was pronounced dead at the scene. Both Schobel and Ruth Souweine, a passenger in the Subaru, were taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. Leon Souweine was being treated at Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan, said Lancaster.

The accident is under investigation, but speed appears to have been a factor, he said. The Franklin County Sheriff’s Department is assisting the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department in reconstructing the accident.

Route 16 is a well-traveled road that goes from Anson to Kingfield. The cars were both destroyed, said Lancaster.
