The cause of a car crash that killed Jennifer Nile in Embden late Thursday afternoon is still under investigation, police said Friday.
Nile, 22, the mother of a young son, Jonathan White, was a passenger in a 2012 Chevy Malibu that crashed into another car head-on on Route 16 at about 4:30 p.m., according to Chief Deputy Dale Lancaster of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department. The accident occurred right in front of Hunnewell Valley Off Road, a popular mud run location in the summer.
The driver of the Chevy, Mark R. Schobel, 24, of North Anson, and Ruth Souweine, a passenger in the other car, driven by Leon Souweine of Bangor, were taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor by LifeFlight helicopter.
There was no information on their condition available from the hospital on Friday. Leon Souweine was treated and released from Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan.
Less than two years ago, both Nile’s brother and her son’s father died in separate car accidents within two weeks of each other.
According to Nile’s Facebook page, she was a nursing assistant at Somerset Rehab and Living Center in Bingham. Nile attended Carrabec High School in North Anson and was studying general science at Kennebec Valley Community College in Fairfield, according to her Facebook page.
Lancaster said Friday that the investigation into the accident is still in the early stages. The sheriff’s department had blood alcohol content tests performed, but the results have not come back, Lancaster said.
Both the Chevy and the 2012 Subaru Outback were destroyed.
On Aug. 31, 2012, Nile’s brother, Ryan Nile, 24, died when the 1995 Chevy Corsica he was driving struck a tree after he apparently lost control. Two passengers were taken to the hospital, one by LifeFlight helicopter to EMMC.
Sam White III, 21, the father of Nile’s son, died Sept. 9 2012, when he “failed to negotiate a curve,” according to Morning Sentinel reports at the time. He was driving a 2000 GMC Sierra south on Route 16, according to the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department. He was declared dead at the scene.
