AUGUSTA — Two young children lost for about an hour Monday evening near Sparrow Drive were found by a neighbor after the kids emerged from the woods.

The children, a 7-year-old boy and 5-year-old girl who are cousins, were playing at outside at a relative’s home on Sparrow Drive when they wandered off into the woods, said Augusta police Sgt. Christian Behr.

“Essentially, the kids had walked away from where they normally play,” he said.

The Augusta Police Department received a call from the relatives about the lost children at about 4:50 p.m., and Augusta police officers and an officer from the Maine State Police Canine Unit conducted a search in the woods for the children, Behr said.

He said the neighbor found the children about two blocks away from where they were playing and called the police.

The children were fine and Augusta fire and rescue personnel determined the kids didn’t have any cold-related injuries, Behr said.
