Trooper’s candy bribe works with locked tot

A bribe of candy helped keep a Sidney toddler on the right side of the law after the boy locked himself in his parents’ car.

Trouble began for the 3-year-old boy during last Thursday’s snowstorm when he and his father were leaving a Dube Way driveway. The car got stuck in the snow. When the boy’s dad got out to investigate, the boy, seated in a car seat, locked the door. The keys were inside the running car.

“The boy could reach the handle, but would not open the door for his parents,” police said.

State Police Trooper Diane Perkins-Vance proved to be more convincing, but not because of her badge.

“Trooper Vance spoke to the boy through the window,” police said. “(She) bribed him with M&Ms and he opened the door.”
