Zach Gilpin of Hampden Academy has been selected as the Maine Gatorade High School Boys’ Basketball Player of the Year. He is the first Gatorade Player of the Year from Hampden Academy.

Gilpin, a 6-foot-5 power forward, averaged 23 points, 10.1 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.6 steals a game for the Broncos (21-1), who won their third straight Eastern Maine Class A title, but lost to Portland in the state championship game, 54-40. Gilpin scored 20 points against Portland in the state final.

Gilpin shot 50 percent from the floor, 40 percent from 3-point range and 76 percent from the free throw line this season. He has been the most valuable player of the Eastern Maine Class A tournament for the last three years. He was selected first team all-state by both the Maine Sunday Telegram and the Bangor Daily News as a junior.

Gilpin sparked the Broncos to the Class A state title his junior year with a win over South Portland. Gilpin was a finalist for the state’s Mr. Basketball Award that went to Dustin Cole of Bonny Eagle.
