NEW SHARON — A child at a New Sharon home potentially saved two adults’ lives after a presumed heroin overdose by calling a relative who then dialed 911, according to the Maine State Police.

On Tuesday, Maine State Police, Franklin County Sheriff’s Department, the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency and other emergency agencies responded to a residence on Farmington Falls Road where two adults were unresponsive, according to Sgt. Matt Casavant of the state police.

“An investigation was conducted and it is believed the two adults inside the residence were using intravenous drugs and became unresponsive,” Casavant said in a news release, adding that a child in the home, fearing for the adults’ safety, phoned a relative, who dialed 911. “It is suspected the recreational drug being used was heroin, but additional investigation is ongoing.”

State police are working to confirm the cause of the overdose as well as the source of the illegal drugs, Casavant said in the release.

One of the adults was taken by Northstar Ambulance to Franklin Memorial Hospital for treatment, according to the release.

The Maine Department of Health and Human Services was contacted about the safety of children in the home and it was determined the children would be placed with a family member temporarily, according to the release.

New Sharon Fire Department, Northstar Ambulance and the Farmington Fire Department all assisted in the incident.
