The April 27 newspaper featured an article, “Growing old at home? Maine doesn’t make it easy,” about the difficulties of aging in Maine.

Credit for these difficulties was rightly given to Gov. Paul LePage, Maine’s leading Republican, who refuses to sustain funding for crucial programs.

One of LePage’s programs missing recognition was the elimination of the cost of living adjustment to retirees, which had been in effect for 37 years. Without COLA, rising prices have greatly reduced the ability of the elderly to maintain an existence.
