BELGRADE LAKES — The Belgrade Historical Society will feature Dr. James S. Leamon, Professor Emeritus at Bates College, at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 21, at Maine Lakes Resource Center, Route 27.
Leamon will speak about Rev. Jacob Bailey and Maine Revolutionary War Loyalists. Loyalists were American colonists who sided with the mother country, England, during the war, and many chose to resettle in the Canadian Maritimes. Dr. Leamon’s book by the same title tells the story of the missionary preacher for the Church of England in the frontier town of Pownalborough, now Dresden, who refused to renounce allegiance to King George III during the American War of Independence. The public is invited to attend this free program.
