SKOWHEGAN — A Skowhegan man remained in custody Wednesday on aggravated felony drug charges for allegedly selling heroin within 1,000 feet one of the town’s “safe zones” — the Bucky Quinn Baseball Field on South Factory Street.

Joseph T. Adams, 21, of 120 Waterville Road, was arrested about 9:15 p.m. Tuesday following a drug search warrant executed by Lt. Carl Gottardi of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department, who led a team of county deputies, Skowhegan police officers and agents from the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency.

During the search of Adams’ home and motor vehicles, authorities seized several bags of suspected heroin, a small amount of cocaine, prescription pills, a large amount of drug paraphernalia, heroin packaging material, hypodermic needles and illegally possessed motor vehicle registration plates, according to Dale Lancaster, chief deputy at the sheriff’s department.

Adams is charged with trafficking in heroin, a class B felony; possession of heroin, a class C felony; and possession of cocaine, a class D misdemeanor. He is also charged with aggravated trafficking, a class A felony, because of his home’s proximity to the baseball field, because children use it. He faces up to 20 years in prison on that charge alone.

Lancaster said the drug investigation has been ongoing for the past couple of months, during which time police believed heroin was sold and used at Adams’ home.

More arrests are expected once all of the seized evidence is processed and laboratory tested, according to Lancaster.

The district attorney’s office will also review the case.

Adams is held at the Somerset County Jail in East Madison awaiting his arraignment in court, possibly on Thursday.
