Kennebec County Democrats this week chose Rebecca Cornell du Houx of Augusta to challenge Sen. Roger Katz, R-Augusta, in the Senate District 15 race.

Cornell du Houx replaces former Rep. Anna Blodgett, D-Augusta, who had filed to run only to keep the position open until Democrats could find a replacement candidate.

Cornell du Houx, 28, has served as a carpentry/masonry specialist with the Maine National Guard’s 133rd Engineer Battalion. She is currently in the Army National Guard reserve and is trained as an emergency medical technician and combat medic.

In June, she lost in the House District 85 Democratic primary to Donna Doore.

Cornell du Houx will face Katz, the Senate minority leader, two-term state senator and former Augusta mayor.

Senate District 15 covers Augusta, China, Oakland, Sidney and Vassalboro.

Also this week, area Republicans chose Ray Bates of Windsor as their nominee in the House District 80 race. He will face Rep. Lori Fowle, D-Vassalboro, in the race for the seat that represents part of Augusta, Vassalboro, Windsor, Somerville and Hibberts Gore.

Political parties have until July 28 to choose replacement candidates for the Nov. 4 ballot.
