A Windsor man was killed in a two-vehicle accident on Route 3 in Vassalboro Tuesday morning, the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office said.

Clifford Welch, 91, of Legion Park Road in Windsor, was killed when the Honda sedan he was a passenger in was struck by an oncoming GMC pickup truck at the intersection of Legion Park Road and Route 3, according to Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Ryan Reardon.

Welch’s wife, Grace Welch, 82, was driving the Honda and Dayna Devaulk, 47, of Augusta, was driving the pickup truck, Reardon said. Both of the drivers were taken to the Alfond Center for Health for what appeared to be minor injuries, Reardon said. The accident occurred shortly before 9 a.m.

The cause of the accident is under investigation, although driver error may be a factor, Reardon said.

Alcohol or speed did not appear to play a role in the crash, he said.

Maine State Police Trooper Michael Pion headed accident reconstruction work, according to sheriff’s Capt. Dennis Picard.
