CONWAY, N.H. — New Hampshire heath officials say a Conway resident has contracted Eastern Equine Encephalitis, a disease spread by infected mosquitoes.
It’s the first confirmed human case of EEE in the state in five years.
The Department of Health and Human Services says EEE can be fatal and there is not a specific treatment. Symptoms include a high fever, severe headache, stiff neck and sore throat. The virus can occasionally cause seizures and coma.
New Hampshire Public Health Director Dr. Jose Montero says people who suspect they have EEE or West Nile virus, also spread by mosquitoes, should immediately contact a medical provider.
He urged the use of bug spray especially at dawn and dusk, getting rid of standing water where mosquitoes breed and wearing long-sleeved or other protective clothing.
