Master Gardener program seeks participants

The University of Maine Cooperative Extension seeks participants for its Master Gardener volunteer training.

Classes for Knox, Lincoln and Waldo counties will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursdays from Oct 2. until Nov. 20. After a winter break, training continues from March 26 through April 30, 2015, followed by spring workshops chosen by participants. Classes will be at the Knox-Lincoln Extension office in Waldoboro and some at the Waldo Extension office in Waldo.

Participants will learn about the relationship between healthy soil and plants, how to grow nutritious fruits and vegetables using sustainable methods to fend off pests and diseases and other topics. Those who are certified after 40 hours of volunteer time also have access to horticultural news and opportunities for advanced training.

The 45-hour program costs $220. Limited scholarships are available. For more information and an online application, visit umaine.edu/knox-lincoln/educational-programs/master-gardeners/.
