AUGUSTA — Lithgow Public Library has announced the events that will kick off A Capital Read 2014, the library’s annual community-wide reading project.

On Wednesday, Oct. 1, at 6:30 p.m., mycologist and author Greg Marley will discuss “Wild Mushrooms: Delicious and Deadly” in the library’s Reading Room. Marley will give an overview of the wide variety of wild mushrooms and their uses. Marley is the author of “Mushrooms for Health; Medicinal Secrets of Northeastern Fungi,” and the award-winning “Chanterelle Dreams, Amanita Nightmares; The Love Lore and Mystic of Mushrooms.”

Marley will return on Saturday, Oct. 4, at 10 a.m. to lead “A Fungus Among Us: A Field and Forest Walk” at Viles Arboretum, 153 Hospital St., along with the arboretum’s Executive Director Mark Desmeules. The interactive walk will introduce participants to the hidden world of mushrooms, along with their risks and benefits.

The mushroom events link thematically with “Life Among Giants” by Bill Roorbach, this year’s A Capital Read selection. Roorbach will discuss his book in an informal book group at noon on Thursday, Oct. 23. That evening, the author will speak at 7 p.m. at Bangor Savings Bank’s Senator Way location. Afterward, Roorbach will greet readers and sign copies of his books.

Free copies of the book are available at Lithgow Library, Bangor Savings Bank, Senator Way, and Viles Arboretum, while supplies last. All events are free and open to the public. For more information, call 626-2415 or visit lithgow.lib.me.us.
