A Gardiner man whose motorcycle crashed in Whitefield Sunday after he hit an injured deer has died.

Kenneth Black, 50, and his wife Laurie Black, 47, were riding separate motorcycles south on Mills Road at 7:27 p.m. when they slowed to avoid a deer in the road that had apparently been hit by another vehicle, according to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office. As they tried to go around the deer, it moved into their path.

Laurie Black was able to control her motorcycle but Kenneth Black wasn’t and ran into the deer and then into his wife’s motorcycle.

Neither of the Blacks was wearing a helmet, police said.

Kenneth Black was taken by ambulance to Whitefield Elementary School, and then by LifeFlight helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. He died of his injuries late Monday afternoon.

Laurie Black refused medical attention, though complained of pain in her head and knee, police said.
