A Wilton man was sentenced to four years in prison with all but one year suspended after pleading guilty to felony and misdemeanor sex crimes.

Peter Essman, 65, pleaded guilty to class C unlawful sexual contact and class D unlawful sexual touching as part of a plea deal Sept. 3 and was sentenced Sept. 25, according to court documents.

Essman was arrested following a Department of Health and Human Services referral that led to an investigation by the Wilton Police Department. The documents state the offenses occurred with victims under the age of 16.

Essman also must register as a sex offender for 10 years.

The felony charge of class C unlawful sexual contact is punishable by up to five years of incarceration and a $5,000 fine, and the misdemeanor charge of class D unlawful sexual touching is punishable by up to a year of incarceration and a $2,000 fine.
