WALES — All it took was two plays for the Oak Hill High School football team to prove it was not looking past Traip Academy Saturday afternoon.

Senior Alex Mace took the second play from scrimmage 77 yards for a touchdown as the Raiders (6-1) rolled to a 35-0 victory over the Rangers (0-6). The win sets up a showdown with Lisbon (6-0) Saturday in a game that will likely crown the Campbell Conference regular season champ.

“We actually said it was going to be a trap game,” Mace said of the game against Traip. “We knew they were going to be very physical, we knew it was going to be a tough game and I guess we just pulled it through.

“… We knew they were going to bring it. They did. It was a nice, physical, tough game — just like we expected.”

Mace was far from done after his hot start, as he returned an interception 98 yards for a touchdown late in the first quarter and also added a 10-yard touchdown run in the second to give Oak Hill a commanding 28-0 lead at halftime.

“We didn’t tackle very well. All you’ve got to do is tackle,” Traip coach Ron Ross said. “If you tackle him and play our positions and don’t overpursue and don’t try to play everybody else’s spot we tackle him.

“He’s going to do that anyways, he’s a good kid but he had a big day today. It was mostly because we didn’t tackle but he’s a heck of a player.”

For the game Mace ran the ball six times for 141 yards and two touchdowns to go along with the pick-six, while classmate Kyle Flaherty had 12 carries for 106 yards and two touchdowns.

“We expect Alex and Kyle to carry the load for us,” Oak Hill coach Stacen Doucette said. “We don’t design plays for either of them. It’s whoever has the hot hand gets the ball and Alex hand a very good game on defense too.

“… Samson Lacroix defensively played really well and obviously I think the offensive line played really well. Our defensive ends (Flaherty and Jonah Martin) did a pretty good job.”
