I arrived home recently to find two printed sheets stuffed in my doorhandle. Sent by a person in Lisbon, the flier states some despicable assertions in an attack against Sen. Colleen Lachowicz, D-Waterville. True to Republican form, it spills hatred against not only the senator but, of course, the poor.

The lies continue in an attempt to vilify everyone who receives public assistance of any kind. The truth is that Maine has the lowest benefit level in New England. The truth is that since 2010 there has been a net outmigration of those receiving public assistance.

Colleen voted against the bills in the flier because they were stupid and vindictive and not based on fact.

The issue that remains is not welfare. It is massive tax cuts flowing to those in the higher income brackets. Colleen fought to repeal those cuts to create a focus on fair taxation. Colleen fought to provide needed assistance to those in need.

Maine is anything but a destination welfare state. Right-wing republicans tear at the very fabric of democracy.
