Since 1978, the Maine Centers for Women, Work and Community has been dedicated to helping the people of Maine succeed in their workplaces, businesses and communities.

One of the most challenging barriers our participants face is access to affordable health care. For many, the new health insurance marketplace has made a significant difference. However, for close to 70,000 low-income Mainers, many of whom are working two or three jobs in an attempt to keep their families above water, there are no options to choose from. Their income is too low to qualify for marketplace subsidies, and even if they do purchase one of the least-expensive coverage options, the deductible and co-pays are simply too cost-prohibitive to access care.

The solution is within our reach. Maine lawmakers still can change course and accept the federal funds set aside for our state and expand MaineCare, bringing critical health care to those falling through the gap.

This is an incredibly important opportunity that will bring not only vital health care to those in need, but also will strengthen our communities, bring resources into our economy, create new job, and improve our health care system statewide.

We all should ask our candidates running for state office this question: “Will you support expanding MaineCare to help provide nearly 70,000 Mainers with health insurance and to create 3,100 new jobs?” Then vote accordingly.
