The telephone rings, invading the peace and quiet of my home. I have registered with the do-not-call line, yet unknown callers from near and far interrupt my reading, my writing, my cooking, my napping, my very being.

Portland, Brunswick, MDC Research — robo political calls at this time of year. But, calls from New York, Connecticut, Mississippi, Colorado, California? Others come from “Out of Area” and one of my favorites is “Unavailable.” Why can’t my number be unavailable to these nuisance calls if I am unable to call back to annoy them?

My most recent caller has been my very own telephone calling itself.

The only solution seems to be caution: keep reading glasses by the phone and do not answer. If the call is important the caller will leave a message or call back. Whose telephone is this anyway?
