A Jay man pleaded guilty in Franklin County court Wednesday to sexually assaulting a teenage girl.

Shawn Burnell, 21, was arrested in July by the Farmington Police Department on felony charges of unlawful sexual contact, criminal threatening and criminal restraint, but as part of the plea agreement the charge of criminal threatening was dropped.

Burnell will be sentenced Dec. 5 on the class B charge of unlawful sexual contact and class C charge of criminal restraint, according to court documents.

Burnell was indicted on the charges by a grand jury earlier this month.

According to court documents, Burnell was accused of trying to force a teenage girl to drink alcohol, held her down and attempted to rape her on July 20. The teenager was assaulted behind Front Street near Narrow Gauge Cinemas, the documents state.

Police reported that the victim attempted to escape multiple times before she eventually was able to escape to a McDonald’s restaurant.
