Like anyone else, I am concerned about taxes but I recognize we need to pay for decent services. So it is important to me that how we tax is fair. Maine recognized on a bipartisan basis many years ago that revenue sharing was one fair way to help communities control property taxes and assist the residents who needed to pay those taxes.
This year, our governor sought to completely eliminate revenue sharing, which would have led to skyrocketing property taxes. Sen. Colleen Lachowicz, D-Waterville, was looking out for all of us from residents to businesses. Colleen Lachowicz worked with like-minded Republicans and Democrats to create a compromise to keep revenue sharing helping communities. As a result, property owners like me can count on reasonable property tax stability. Colleen can count on my vote for Senate in District 16 as a result, too.
