I want to congratulate Eliot Cutler on a fine campaign and introducing some exciting economic ideas into the race.

I disagree with him on one very important point, however. He recently said, “This election is not solely about defeating Paul LePage.” A majority of Maine voters believe avoiding LePage’s re-election is the primary issue.

It was interesting to watch LePage high-fiving and applauding Cutler during the debates for his attacks on Mike Michaud. LePage is Cutler’s biggest supporter. He knows Cutler can’t win, but more importantly, LePage knows he can’t win without Cutler taking votes away from Michaud.

We cannot allow LePage to be re-elected as our 37 percent governor. This is the optimal time for Cutler to broker an exit strategy with Michaud. He will never have better leverage to negotiate. If he continues his campaign, we may be facing an unbearable scenario come Nov. 4.
