The police chief of the Oxford County town of Paris faces a charge of drunk driving after getting pulled over in Naples last week.

Chief Michael Madden, 50, of Harrison was pulled over by a Cumberland County sheriff’s deputy on Wiley Road just after midnight last Friday.

Police said Madden was pulled over for “erratic operation” and given a field sobriety test, which he failed.

Police would not release the results of the blood alcohol test until after Madden’s scheduled arraignment on Jan. 20.

Madden was taken to the Bridgton Police Department where he was released on bail.

Madden was driving his personal vehicle and had no passengers. It is not clear where he was coming from or headed to. Police said he was cooperative during the stop.

Paris Town Manager Amy Bernard refused to discuss Madden’s status with the town saying it was a personnel matter and referred questions about him to the town’s attorney. She did say the police department is currently being overseen by patrol Sgt. Hartley “Skip” Mowatt, who also is the school resource officer, according to the department’s website.

The website says that in addition to Madden and Mowatt, the department has a lieutenant, five patrol officers, five reserve officers and an animal control officer.

Madden was named police chief in the town of 5,200 in October 2013 after serving for 27 years with the Shelton, Connecticut, Police Department, leaving as a patrol captain.

Madden also runs The Madden Group Artist Management and, according to the Connecticut Post’s website, has managed appearances for the Marshall Tucker Band on the East Coast.
