AUGUSTA — A former city man pleaded guilty Tuesday in Kennebec County Superior Court to charges related to throwing bleach at a 60-year-old woman in March 2013.

Charles S. Cortright III, 46, now of Westbrook, pleaded guilty to domestic violence assault with a dangerous weapon (the bleach), reckless conduct and two counts each of assault and criminal mischief.

He was sentenced to three years in jail, with all but 160 days suspended, and two years’ probation and was fined $600.

Kennebec County District Attorney Maeghan Maloney said Cortright had significant mental health problems and is required to attend mental health counseling as a condition of probation. Other conditions include attending a Certified Batterers Intervention Program.

Cortright was represented at the hearing by defense attorney Kevin Sullivan. Sullivan said Cortright was released from jail Tuesday, having been given credit for 160 days served.

At the time of the offense, police said they went on March 11, 2013 to Pine View Estates on Capitol Street in Augusta, where they found a woman doused with bleach as well as a 56-year-old man who apparently had been punched by Cortright.

Police said the suspect and the victims were acquainted.

They said Cortright and the woman had argued earlier that night and then Cortright left. When he returned shortly afterward, he knocked on the woman’s apartment door and identified himself as a police officer in order to get her to open it so he could heave bleach into her face, police said.

She was taken to a hospital for treatment.
