Inland Family Care in Unity said Friday that an employee appears to have misused patient credit card information for personal gain.

“We are deeply shocked and disheartened that a member of our team appears to have violated our patients’ trust, and ours,” said CEO John Dalton in a prepared statement.

According to the Waterville-based health care provider, the employee was arrested Friday morning and immediately terminated from employment. Inland did not specify how many patients were affected, but said it was only a small number who paid for services at the Unity practice with a credit or debit card in the last six months.

Inland Family Care, at 80 Main St. in Unity, is a departmant of Inland Hospital in Waterville.

The Waldo County Sheriff’s Office could not be reached for comment, and the identification of the fired employee was not available.

Inland Family Care said it is notifying patients who had billing contact with the accused and auditing its billing process to institute additional controls to safeguard future payments.

Patients who had billing contact with the employee have been told to review debit and credit card statements and report unusual charges to the hospital’s practice administrator and to the sheriff’s office.

Concerns over billing can be addressed with Inland Practice Administrator Belinda Fletcher at 861-3099 as well as the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office at 338-6786, the statement said.
