“The Audacity to Dream: The Courage to Act for Justice” is the theme of a Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration at Colby College, which will feature keynote speaker Majora Carter, an urban revitalization specialist and Peabody Award-winning radio broadcaster.

Carter will deliver an address titled “Home(town) Security” at 7 p.m. at the Ostrave Auditorium in Colby’s Diamond Building on Monday. The event is open to the public.

A native of the Bronx, New York, Carter is the founder of Sustainable South Bronx, which works to address economic and environmental issues in the South Bronx through green job training and community environmental programs, and Green For All, a group whose aim is to get people of color involved in the climate change movement.

Also in Waterville, a Martin Luther King Jr. Day community breakfast will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. at Spectrum Generations Muskie Center on Gold Street.

Richard L. Biffle III, professor of education at Thomas College, will give a talk titled “Weaving A Tapestry of Passion, Voice and Heart: Continuing the Work of Unpopular Ideas for Challenging and Changing Times.” The event is open to the public and costs $7 for adults and $3 for children.

Biffle is a former national staff member of the NAACP who has worked in civil rights, social justice and education. Also at the event, students from the George Mitchell School in Waterville will share their dreams for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

In Farmington, an ecumenical service will be held at noon Monday at the Henderson Memorial Baptist Church on Academy Street. The service will reflect a particular quote from Martin Luther King Jr.: “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?” according to a news release from the church.

Speakers will be addressing the issue of food insecurity, another theme of the service.
