WATERVILLE — Police are investigating a robbery that allegedly took place late Sunday morning outside 13 Gray St. in the city’s South End.

The man reported that as he was getting out of a passenger vehicle at that address, a man approached him, struck him in the face and brandished “what appeared to be a long screwdriver,” Deputy police Chief Charles Rumsey said Monday.

Rumsey said the robber “threatened to stab the victim and stole the victim’s wallet,” which had a small amount of cash and “miscellaneous IDs.”

Police searched the area and requested help from state police, who brought a dog to track the robber, Rumsey said.

The tracking was not successful because so much foot traffic occurred in the area after police got the call and before the dog arrived, according to Rumsey.

He said Waterville police Detective Josh Woods interviewed the robbery victim and witnesses and is investigating the case.

Rumsey said a caller to the department around 11:30 a.m. Sunday said there had been a stabbing on Gray Street.

Rumsey said after police talked to people at the scene they “determined there had been no stabbing and no one was seriously injured.”

Gray Street is a short street that stretches from Water Street to Summer Street in the South End.

Rumsey asked that anyone with information about the case call Woods at 680-4700.
