AUGUSTA — Three Riverview Psychiatric Center patients were among the almost three dozen people indicted Thursday by a grand jury in Kennebec County.

Two are accused of assaulting people who work at the state hospital in Augusta, which treats people found not criminally responsible for offenses and those sent there under court order. The third forensic patient is accused of going on a rampage and damaging hospital property.

An indictment is not a determination of guilt, but it indicates that there is enough evidence to proceed with formal charges and a trial.

Anthony Caleb Barone, 24, was indicted on two counts of assault on an officer.

The indictment says Barone “did intentionally knowingly, or recklessly cause bodily injury or offensive physical contact” to two officers, Corey Goodchild and John Matthews, on Nov. 4 at Riverview.

Barone was charged previously by complaint with misdemeanor assaults on two Riverview employees, which allegedly occurred Aug. 18 and Oct. 29.

One police affidavit says within a 24-hour period Barone had assaulted three Riverview staff members, severely injuring two of them.

Arlene M. Edson, 30, is accused in two indictments of assaulting two women there, one on Nov. 27 and the other on Dec. 11. She also is charged with violation of a condition of release in connection with the latter incident.

Edson was charged previously in a complaint with a misdemeanor assault charge for allegedly punching a Riverview maintenance worker in the face on Dec. 6.

In a separate incident, state investigators found that Edson was pepper-sprayed while naked and left without treatment for hours at the hospital in December 2013, and attorneys for her have sent a notice of claim to the state, informing it of a potential lawsuit involving that incident.

Charles D. Miles, 35, is charged with aggravated criminal mischief.

He is accused of damaging windows, an elevator scanner, an exit sign and tempered glass furniture, among other things, in an incident Aug. 31. At the time, damage estimates were more than $4,370.

Miles has been convicted previously of criminal mischief and terrorizing hospital staff members.

He has been in the custody of the commissioner of the Department of Health and Human services since Miles was found not criminally responsible in 1999 for burning down the Skowhegan Fairgrounds and causing millions of dollars in damage.

Conditions of bail on the criminal mischief charges prohibited him from being kept at Riverview, so he was sent to the special mental health unit at the Maine State Prison in Warren.

He also was sentenced to 96 months in federal prison for making threats against the president in the early 2000s related to Miles’ anger about a war.
