NASHUA, N.H. — Thomas College broke open a close game by scoring the first six goals of the second half in a 14-7 victory over Rivier in the women’s lacrosse season opener for both teams Sunday afternoon.

Junior Erin Nelligan led Thomas with six goals and two assists. Gardiner Area High School grad Jennifer Day added four goals and Brittany Premo scored two. Sophomore Allie McCarthy made 12 saves for the win. The Terriers led 6-4 at halftime, then scored six goals in a span of less than 16 minutes at the beginning of the second half.

Amanda Wickens and Taylor Lirakis each scored three goals for Rivier.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

UNH 61, MAINE 47: Carlie Pogue had 20 points and 10 rebounds in 22 minutes off the bench as the Wildcats snapped Maine’s 14-game winning streak in Durham, N.H.

The loss means Maine finishes the regular season at 21-7 overall and 14-2 in America East. The Black Bears are co-league champions with Albany and host Binghamton in an America East quarterfinal at noon, Saturday.

Elizabeth Belanger scored 18 points and Leavitt grad Kristen Anderson had five assists for UNH (17-11, 9-7). Liz Wood, with 19 points, and Sigi Koizar, with 13, were the top scorers for Maine. The Bears trailed 44-38 after a layup by Koizar with 10:08 to go, but Maine scored only nine points the rest of the way.

BASEBALL

MAINE 8-4, ST. BONAVENTURE 3-5: Brett Chappell had two hits in each game as the Black Bears split a doubleheader with the Bonnies in Winter Haven, Fla.

Kevin Stypulkowski and Shane Bussey each had two hits and drove in three runs as Maine (2-8) won the first game, 8-3. Scott Heath started and allowed one earned run in six innings to pick up the win.

Heath was the designated hitter in Game 2, and he and Sam Balzano each banged out three hits. St. Bonaventure (2-1) led 5-2 after scoring four runs in the top of the fifth, but Maine fought back and trailed 5-4 after plating a run in the bottom of the seventh. The Black Bears had the tying run on third with nobody out, but Bonnies pitcher Aaron Phillips struck out the next two batters and got out of the inning.

Rivier 19, Thomas 3: The Raiders led 8-1 at halftime and put things out of reach in the third quarter to earn the win in Nashua, N.H.

Rivier out-shot Thomas, 56-9, and had a 36-11 advantage in ground balls. Cody Lynch was the top scorer for the Raiders (2-0), with four goals and two assists. Tyler Tambouris and Kyle Graham combined for five goals and five assists. Rivier struck for eight goals in a little over 11 minutes in the third quarter.

Colby Blondin, Bryan Ferris and Jacob Kendall had the goals for Thomas (0-1).

Also Sunday: Cony grad Josie Lee made her first start of the season and played 35 minutes as Tufts defeated Bowdoin, 68-52, to win the New England Small College Athletic Conference women’s basketball championship. Lee finished the game with 12 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals. Lee’s totals of points, assists, and steals all set or matched personal career highs at Tufts.
