The city of Waterville recently voted to study the options to create a roundabout or change the traffic heading toward the Water Street/Hathaway Center.

Like with every situation, people took sides. Education teaches students to study an issue before making informed decisions. This is exactly what they are doing. Let them provide the public with all options. Do not expect a price tag before they have all the information. This is how we run a household. If a person wanted to make an improvement to their home, first they would need to study their options. Only after getting all the information could they make a reasonable decision about whether it was worth the expense. An attractive functional change could only be positive for the city.

Speaking of being attractive and inviting, I think the city should take a good look at the median island on one of our highly traveled streets, College Avenue. This avenue leads cars to many parts of the city and business. When spring comes and the weather improves, I would suggest eliminating the weeds that stand like small trees in its cracks, filling the cracks and painting it like the medians on Upper Main Street or covering it with artificial turf.

The city should consider using Kennebec County jail inmates for the labor. That would be a win-win. They show intent to improve their life, and we get a painted, attractive median, showcasing Waterville as a city proud of its upkeep.
