Bob Stillwell of the Maine State Radon Program explained to Augusta Kiwanians recently what radon is all about and what it can do in water. “The only way to determine if your house had a radon problem is to conduct a radon test with equipment obtained from most any hardware store with a cost of about $25, he emphasized, according to a news release submitted by Augusta Kiwanis Publicity Chair Milt Huntington.
He recommended Radon, which can cause lung cancer, be tested in every Maine well. Rental buildings are required to conduct periodic testings. There are no such regulations for private dwellings, and according to Stillwell, few Maine homes have worrisome levels of radon gas.
