Sheepscot Valley Conservation Association will explore nature journaling at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 22, Earth Day, at the Bass Falls Preserve in Alna. A nature journal is a tool to increase awareness and observation in the natural world, learn about the world, and provide opportunities to be creative, according to a news release from the association. Nature journals are also a tool that can be used to collect valuable scientific data and to lead a person on the path to becoming a citizen scientist.

Lynne Flaccus, SVCA programs manager, will lead the walk. Flaccus and volunteers led a nature journal making workshop in February at the Sheepscot General. Participants from that workshop can bring the journal they made or one they purchased. Those who missed the February workshop can bring their own journal or bring loose paper and a clipboard. Participants can try some basic and drawing activities, observation games and activities, and explore what spring has to offer along the trail. This walk is appropriate for all ages and skill levels. Bring paper or a notebook, pencils, pens, crayons or whatever to draw with. A hand lens or magnifying glass is also helpful. Some will be available for use, along with some extra paper and drawing tools. Those who plan to attend are asked to meet at the Bass Falls kiosk and parking area at 10 a.m. Rain date Thursday, April 23.

The preserve is maintained with funding from Ames True Value Hardware & Supply in Wiscasset through SVCA’s Adopt-A-Preserve Program, according to the release. The association is a member organization caring for Maine’s 58-mile Sheepscot River since 1969. For more information, call the office at 586-5616, visit sheepscot.org.
