Burglars hit five commercial businesses in downtown Winthrop overnight Thursday.

Winthrop Police Detective Pete Struck said he received the first report of a break-in at 4:20 a.m. Friday from New Beginnings Fitness Center, 357 E. Main St.

Responding officers discovered three other break-ins at the same mini-mall at Tangles Destination Hair Salon, China Empress and Peppers Garden & Grill.

A fifth burglary was reported later at United Fitness and Martial Arts, 186 Route 133.

“It looks like they pried some doors and broke the glass on others and went in and rummaged through,” Struck said on Friday. “It appears they were looking for cash.”

Struck said it is unclear whether the break-ins were the work of one person or more and it’s unclear whether they are connected to other commercial burglaries occurring in the region in the last month.

He said two of those were in Winthrop.

Struck said the Winthrop Congregational Church, UCC, at Bowdoin and Main streets was broken into April 3 as well as Fast Eddies Drive In on Route 202.

Struck asked that people contact Winthrop police at 377-7226 if they have information about the burglaries or if they believe they saw something suspicious.
