Ben True of North Yarmouth won the Boston Athletic Association 5K on Saturday with a time of 13 minutes, 22 seconds, breaking the American 5K road record of 13:24 set by Marc Davis in 1996.
It’s the third time True, 29, has won the race. He also won in 2011 and 2012, and last year lost to Ethiopia’s Dejen Gebremeskel in a photo finish.
Stephen Sambu of Kenya finished second in 13:23 and Daniel Salel of Kenya took third in 13:27.
“Sambu and I worked really well together from about 2 kilometers on,” True told Runner’s World. “We were really shoulder to shoulder, especially the whole last mile. Sambu was doing more of the pushing and I was just trying to hold on. I was a little afraid I wasn’t going to be able to reel him back in, but luckily I was able to get the legs churning over.”
Molly Huddle, 30, of Providence, Rhode Island, set an American road record in the women’s division, finishing in 14:50 to break Deena Kastor’s mark of 14:54 set in 2002.
Ethopian runners took the next four places, led by Sentayehu Ejigu in 14:51 and Mamitu Daska in 14:52.
Both True and Huddle collected $12,500 – $7,500 for first place and $5,000 for breaking the event record.
Erica Jesseman, 26, of Scarborough was the top Maine woman, the second American woman, and 11th overall in the women’s division with a time of 16:28.
