RICHMOND — A Richmond man is in critical condition at a Lewiston hospital after police say his wife crashed their car into a brook and tree off Brown Road on Saturday morning.

Just before 8 a.m., Ruby Tarbox, 78, was picking up her husband, Gilbert Tarbox, 84, from his morning walk near their home to go out to breakfast, said Officer Christopher Giles of the Richmond Police Department. As she drove, Giles said Ruby Tarbox tried to help her husband fasten his seatbelt, and the car went across and off the road. The crash was barely visible from the road’s surface, but Giles said a passer-by noticed it shortly after it happened.

Giles said Gilbert Tarbox didn’t have his seatbelt on at impact, and he suffered a head injury and was taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, where a hospital spokesman said he was in critical condition on Monday morning.

Ruby Tarbox may have broken a rib in the crash, Giles said. She was taken by ambulance to the Lewiston hospital, where she was in good condition on Monday.
