WATERVILLE — Jason Buco hit three home runs but Colby had to settle for a split of a doubleheader with NESCAC rival Bowdoin on Saturday at Coombs Field.

Buco hit two solo homers in the first game but the Mules dropped a 5-3 decision. In the nightcap, Buco, who was 5-for-9 on the day and drove in four runs, belted another solo blast to propel Colby back from a 3-0 deficit. The Mules (16-11, 5-7 NESCAC) won the game in the 10th inning when Zach Ellenthal’s sacrifice fly scored Tommy Forese for the 4-3 win. Aaron Rosen homered for the Polar Bears (13-17, 5-6).

CASTLETON 11-15, UMAINE-FARMINGTON 9-2: The University of Maine at Farmington nearly erased an eight-run deficit in the first game of a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader but came up shy, then couldn’t answer another strong offensive showing by Castleton in the second game at Hippach Field in Farmington.

Erskine Academy’s Sean Cabaniss went 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored in Game 1 and sparked a four-run sixth inning that pulled the Beavers within two runs. But they went down 1-2-3 in the ninth to fall short. Trevor Hisler, of Skowhegan, also had three hits and scored three runs for UMF (16-14, 9-11 NAC). Grayson Beressi had a home run and drove in both runs for UMF in the nightcap.

THOMAS 13-1, LYNDON STATE 3-0: Thomas pounded out 12 hits in Game 1 and Dominic Esposito and Nik Beeson combined on a four-hit shutout in the nightcap as Thomas swept at North Atlantic Conference doubleheader from Lyndon State in Waterville.

Anree Benitez went 4-for-4 and scored four runs to lead the Terriers (16-17, 14-8 NAC) in the blowout opener. Dylan Newton hit a solo homer for the Hornets (8-22, 7-13). In Game 2, Esponsito went six innings and yielded just three hits to pick up the win. Beeson struck out a pair in the seventh to pick up the save.

MAINE 6-2, UMBC 5-3: Luke Morrill went 2-for-6 and drove in three runs, including the game-winner in the 12th inning of Game 1, as the University of Maine split an America East doubleheader with University of Maryland-Baltimore County in Baltimore.

Logan Fullmer picked up the win with five innings of shutout relief in the opener for the Black Bears (15-21, 5-8 America East). Justin Courtney pitched six strong innings scattering eight hits in Game 2 but had to take the loss as Conrad Wozniak allowed five hits and one earned run to pick up the win for UMBC (19-16, 6-8).

SOFTBALL

MAINE 8-5, HARTFORD 0-4: The University of Maine picked up walk-off wins on a grand slam and a bloop single to sweep an American East doubleheader with Hartford on Saturday in Orono.

Felicia Lennon’s grand slam ended Game 1 in six innings due to the eight-run mercy rule. That capped a six-run sixth for the Black Bears (18-17, 7-4 AE). Nikki Byron ended a tighter Game 2 with her RBI bloop single to score Lennon in the bottom of the seventh.

THOMAS 7-8, NEC 2-6: Thomas College jumped out to an early lead in both games and swept a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader with New England College.

Sonja Morse, of South China, tied a season high with 11 strikeouts in the first game. Emily McKenney, of Madison, led the offense with a home run and two runs driven in for the Terriers (10-19, 6-4 NAC), who took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and never trailed. In the nightcap, Thomas pushed four runs across in the first inning but had two score two in the bottom of the sixth to get past NEC (17-15, 6-6). Jordan Agger-Barnes had 3 RBI and Morse picked up her second win of the day with three strikeouts.
