The burn by the Maine Forestry Service scheduled for Wednesday in the town of Rome was postponed.

The burn was to be at 10:30 a.m. near Blueberry Hill off Watson Pond Road.

“With the class day at 4 (very high), low relative humidity and the winds predicted to be gusting to 30 mph, it was decided to postpone rather than take the chance of the fire escaping,” said Kent Nelson, of the Forest Service, in a news release Wednesday morning. “Although the rangers and the volunteer wildland firefighters had been there since 8:30 a.m., it is not uncommon for a prescribed burn to be postponed to another day.

“The safety of firefighters and the protection of property/natural resources is always the priority.”

The intention of the burn was to clear brush in order to reduce the danger of a wildfire.

No information was available about what the new date for the burn is.
