Three people are facing charges in connection with a break-in at a Maine State Police trooper’s home garage last week in West Gardiner and stealing ammunition, police patches and a jacket in an attempt to get money for drugs.

Dustin Woodworth, 29, of Augusta, and Ian Watson, 27, and Sarah Giampetro, 25, both of Farmingdale, were arrested early Sunday morning, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland said in a news release.

Woodworth and Watson are charged with burglary, felony theft and criminal mischief. Giampetro is charged with unlawful possession of prescription medication.

Trooper Tim Black, of the Maine State Police, on Thursday discovered the break-in at the garage of his West Gardiner home. Maine State Police Trooper Adam McNaughton, who investigated the burglary, wrote in court documents that the burglars got in by breaking a door. The burglars also spray-painted a window black.

Black described a missing kayak and two mountain bicycles. Detectives were able to recover fingerprints from the can of spray paint and a DNA swab, McNaughton wrote.

Black called McNaughton on Saturday after finding the kayak on Craigslist. McNaughton did his own search to find the kayak, which was being sold in Chelsea for $400. McNaughton set up a meeting with the seller, later identified as 29-year-old Brandon Maxim. He initially told McNaughton and Black that he no longer had use of the kayak.

“Brandon informed me that he did not want the kayak anymore because his girlfriend wanted him to sell it because they live paycheck to paycheck,” McNaughton wrote.

Maxim changed his story once he learned that McNaughton and Black were from the state police and that the kayak was stolen. Maxim said he bought the kayak Thursday from Woodworth for $140.

Maxim said he did not know the kayak was stolen, McNaughton wrote. Last month, Maxim placed an ad on Facebook looking for a kayak, McNaughton wrote. Woodworth reportedly answered that ad Thursday morning, sending pictures of the kayak.

“Brandon also said that Dustin was selling ammunition, but did not know what kind or caliber,” McNaughton wrote.

Police searched Woodworth’s home at 12:45 a.m. Sunday. Woodworth, who was home at the time, admitted that he and Watson had stolen items from the garage over two nights, McNaughton wrote. Woodworth said he had sold most of the ammunition, McNaughton wrote, but still had the bulletproof vest, pepper spray and one of the mountain bikes. The stolen bike, foreign money and the bulletproof vest were found in Watson’s Gardiner home, McNaughton wrote.

“Troopers say the money was being used to buy drugs,” McCausland said.

Watson and Woodworth were being held at the Kennebec County jail in lieu of $20,000 cash bail. Both appeared before a judge Monday afternoon and their bail was reduced, but both were still at the jail as of Tuesday afternoon. Watson was being held in lieu of $750 cash bail or $100 cash with a Maine Pretrial Services contract, and Woodworth was being held in lieu of $750 cash bail or $500 cash with a pretrial contract.

Giampetro is free on $200 cash bail.
