A Newport man who was found by a game warden after being lost for 24 hours earlier this week in the woods in Elliotsville was arrested on a warrant after he was found.

Michael Chapman, 40, of Newport, was being held Wednesday in the Piscataquis County Jail on a warrant for unpaid fines and is due to appear in court Thursday, according to the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Office.

Chapman was released from prison last June after April 2013 convictions of burglary and other charges.

He and Kelli Macfarlin, 38, were reported missing Monday afternoon after they disappeared while bringing camping equipment to their car near Little Wilson Falls in Elliotsville. They were found by a warden from the Maine Warden Service about 12:45 p.m. Tuesday on the Appalachian Trail near Big Wilson Stream about two miles from their campsite.

The two became lost when they followed the wrong trail from their campsite back to their vehicle, said Cpl. John MacDonald, of the Warden Service, in a news release Tuesday.

Elliotsville, a township, is northeast of Monson. The Appalachian Trail crosses it.
