AUGUSTA — A Readfield man has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident after police said the semi-truck he was driving Thursday morning caused a car accident on the Cushnoc Crossing Bridge and he then drove away.

David Walter, 71, was issued a summons on the charge Thursday at about noon at the Augusta police station, according to a news release from police.

No one was injured in the crash, police said.

The truck, which did not have a trailer attached, made an illegal U-turn on the Route 3 bridge at about 6:45 a.m., according to police. It had been heading south on Riverside Drive, turned right onto the third bridge going west, and then made an illegal U-turn at the end of the median strip from the far right lane, back toward Riverside Drive, according to police.

Police said the maneuver appears to have prompted a red Buick sedan to swerve, causing a black pickup truck to crash into the red sedan.

“The semi-truck left the area without making contact with the people involved,” a release from police stated.

Witnesses described the semi-truck as a bright royal blue with chrome and as very clean and shiny. Police said later Thursday that their investigation found Walter “did make the U-turn which resulted in the crash.”
