CHINA — A house belonging to a town employee was destroyed by fire Wednesday morning.

Town officials said the home, at 88 Weeks Mills Road, is owned by Shawn Reed, who is a public works employee for the town of China.

Firefighting crews from China, South China, Palermo, Vassalboro and Weeks Mills were at the scene Wednesday afternoon, but flames had been knocked down before 1 p.m.

Smoke streamed out of the remains of the roofless structures as firefighters sprayed water and foam inside. The fire destroyed most of the walls and melted the beige siding on the wall portions that still stood.

The homeowners were absent at the time of the fire, but they reported it by telephone after returning home Wednesday morning, South China Fire Chief Richard Morse said.

No one was injured, and it’s not clear what started the fire, he said.

When firefighters arrived Wednesday morning, the house was already “pretty well involved” in the fire, Morse said.

The Red Cross said in a statement that it will meet with the family of seven — two adults and five children — affected by the fire to offer assistance such as food, clothing, emergency shelter and support.
