A Lewiston woman was injured Saturday when her sport utility vehicle veered off U.S. Route 202 in Monmouth and crashed through a guard rail, police said.

Janet Morin, 45, was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston with complaints of pain, said Monmouth Police Chief Kevin Mulherin. The hospital did not return a call Monday seeking an update of Morin’s condition.

The crash occurred around 6:30 a.m. Saturday as Morin drove her 2004 Dodge Durango west on U.S. Route 202 near the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

“She fell asleep and went off the road and hit a guard rail,” Mulherin said.

The Durango drove down an embankment before stopping. Morin was wearing a seat belt.

Mulherin said Monmouth firefighters had to cut away a section of the guard rail “because it had bent so much,” Mulherin said. The section of Route 202 was reduced to one lane as crews tended to Morin and removed the SUV, Mulherin said. The Durango was destroyed.

Neither speed nor substances was a factor in the crash and there are no charges, he said.
