After reading about another truck destroyed by the railroad bridge over Water Street last week (article, “Tractor-trailer hits Water Street bridge in Augusta,” June 16), I wonder why Augusta or the state has not asked (or told) the railroad company to remove the bridge.

This is a railroad bridge with gravel parking lots on one end and a torn down paper mill on the other end. The bridge has not been used in more than 20 years and probably would need to be replaced if the railroad ever decided to reactivate the tracks through Augusta.

So I say it is time to save city services the time, and truckers the anguish, of removing destroyed trucks, which are routed through Water Street by various computerized map programs.

A possible low-cost solution would be to detach the bridge from its ends and have a crane lift it up to place it on its own tracks on the Bridge Street side, since only the portion over Water Street needs to be removed.
